The Rise of AI-Assisted Thought Leadership

Ghostwriting has existed as long as publishing. Political speechwriters, executive communications teams, celebrity book collaborators: the idea that prominent people have help expressing their ideas is not new. What's changed is the cost curve, the speed, and what's technically possible. Worth tracing the full arc of where we've been, because the implications are real.

The original ghostwriter model had one core strength: a skilled writer could, over time, develop a genuine feel for how their subject thinks and communicates. Robert Caro spent decades working with Lyndon Johnson's voice. Good speechwriters are almost eerie in their ability to capture a speaker's rhythm and worldview. The limitation was scale and economics: you needed a person, they needed access, and the relationship took time to develop. For most executives, this was a resource available only to the most prominent few.

The first wave of AI writing tools promised to democratize this. Jasper, Copy.ai, the ChatGPT prompt-and-post workflow: suddenly anyone could generate content about anything in seconds. The problem revealed itself quickly: the content was indistinguishable. Not indistinguishable from human content exactly, but indistinguishable from every other piece of AI content on the same topic. The tools were trained to generate fluent, reasonable prose, and they were excellent at it. What they couldn't do was have an opinion, develop a consistent voice, or understand the specific nuance of how a particular person sees their industry.

The result was a wave of AI content pollution. LinkedIn feeds filled with posts that were competently written and completely forgettable. Readers couldn't always identify exactly what was wrong, but they could feel it: the slightly too-smooth phrasing, the conclusions that were both true and obvious, the absence of any personality that could be agreed with or argued against. Engagement on AI-generated content tends to be shallow because there's nothing there to engage with.

This is the failure mode that the second wave of AI tools is designed to address. The insight is that the problem was never "can AI write?" Clearly it can. The problem was "whose perspective is the AI writing from?" Generic AI writes from the perspective of the median of its training data. That's useful for many things. For thought leadership, it's exactly wrong. Thought leadership is by definition not the median take.

Voice learning changes the equation. Instead of prompting a general model to "write a LinkedIn post about supply chain disruption," a voice-learned system generates a post the way that specific person would write about supply chain disruption, drawing on their industry background, their habitual framing, their level of technical depth, their rhetorical tendencies. Two executives with identical seniority and different backgrounds produce genuinely different output on the same prompt. This is what good ghostwriting achieved at its best. The AI path to getting there is training on actual examples of how someone communicates and continuously refining based on their feedback.

The industry signal dimension adds another layer that generic AI tools miss entirely. A well-trained language model knows a lot about the world in general. It knows much less about what's happening right now, and almost nothing about the specific signals that matter for a given executive's audience. A VP of Operations in semiconductor manufacturing has a very different signal feed than a CMO in consumer retail. The relevant regulatory changes, the important earnings calls, the emerging research: these require a targeted pipeline, not a general model. Thought leadership grounded in timely, specific signals reads completely differently from content generated by asking "write something about the semiconductor industry."

This is where we are now: AI as writing partner rather than content vending machine. The mental model shift matters. A vending machine produces output from an input: you give it a topic, it gives you a post. A writing partner has internalized your perspective, knows what you care about, brings you relevant things to react to, and drafts in a way that requires you to refine rather than to create from scratch. The output is yours because the thinking is yours; the partner just removed the friction between thinking and publishing.

The ethics come up constantly, so let me address them directly. Is it dishonest to use AI assistance for thought leadership content? That depends entirely on whose ideas are being published. If an executive uses AI to draft a post that expresses their genuine views, refined by their own judgment, that's not fundamentally different from an executive using a communications team the same way. If an executive is publishing AI-generated ideas they haven't actually thought about and couldn't defend in conversation, that's a different problem, and one that will tend to be self-correcting when someone asks a follow-up question.

There's a lot of hard-won expertise trapped in people's heads that rarely gets written down. That's a problem worth solving.
